Jonah Marshall was the most fucking insufferable dude Adam ever had the displeasure of meeting in his entire life.
He was loud. He was annoying. He always reeked of pot and made sure every car they drove stunk just as bad. He didn’t take shit seriously, and he couldn’t do anything right. Adam couldn’t fucking stand him.
Yet Adam couldn’t stop checking him out like he was some sort of treat for the eyes. It’s not that Jonah was ugly, he totally wasn’t. He was just so annoying . But deep down Adam sometimes found Jonah funny, though he’d never admit it out loud.
How could he be attracted to such a worthless, obnoxious piece of shit?
To make it worse, Adam thought about what would happen, or what could happen, if the two were put into various awkward situations together. He obsessed over those possibilities and did everything he could to make sure they would never have the chance to happen.
Like what would happen if the two shared a bed at a motel. What if he lost control of himself and made something happen? The idea made him shudder. Whenever they needed to turn in for the night, Adam would always insist that he go in first to graciously “check that they actually had a vacancy” just so Jonah “didn’t have to get out of the car for no reason”. But what he was actually doing was making sure they would get a room with more than one bed, and if they couldn’t, he would go back to the car and lie to Jonah and say all the rooms were full. The vacancy sign just wasn’t changed yet. Better move on the to next motel! Wash, rinse, repeat until they found one to Adam’s liking.
Besides, why would he even want to sleep next to Jonah, anyway? It’s not like he’d be nice and warm to snuggle up to on a cold winter night. It wasn’t like Adam was secretly hoping for some spontaneous sexual encounter that neither of them saw coming. Nothing like that. No way, not ever. And he totally was not thinking about that right at this very moment.
That’s why when they stopped at their third motel for the night, exhausted and freezing cold, Adam nearly lost all composure when Jonah opened the door and launched himself out from the backseat of the car.
“Dude, I need to piss so fucking bad. Don’t care if they have an empty room, I gotta see if they at least got a bathroom.”
Well, Adam wasn’t going to be the guy to make him go piss in a bush or something, not with people around, but he really hoped this would be the motel they would be staying at by his own choice. With Jonah going in with him, he wouldn’t be able to lie about the rooms. Whatever they had, they would be stuck with.
When they went to the desk, the owner was pretty open and upfront about having lots of rooms available tonight… but laughed that one of them might have to sleep on the floor.
“Unless you’re into that kind of this,” he joked, none the wiser.
Great.
Maybe he would sleep on the floor tonight.
Adam was handed the keys to go get their things settled into the room while Jonah begged the owner to let him use the bathroom near the front desk. Said he’d piss himself if he walked another step. Maybe if he did, Adam could make him sleep on the floor instead.
‘I don’t care if you changed your pants, that’s still fucking nasty. I’m not sleeping next to you, go freeze on the shitty carpet from the ‘60s.’
But he wouldn’t be that lucky, and Jonah came strolling into the room not long after. Couldn’t he catch a break at all tonight?
“Damn, there really is only one bed, huh?”
Yeah. So lay your pretty ass on the floor and stay there.
But instead of taking the hint that Adam refused to vocalize out loud, Jonah jumped up into the bed and sprawled himself out. “So fuckin’ tired. I could pass out just like this.”
Adam wanted to fucking scream. “Oh fuck you. At least move over. I’m not sleeping on the floor.”
Jonah gave Adam a knowing grin. “So you’d rather sleep next to me?”
“I’d rather you sleep on the floor.”
He snorted and moved himself to one side of the bed. “Not happening. We’ll have to share.”
Adam reluctantly climbed in beside Jonah, keeping as close to the edge of the bed as he could without falling off. If Jonah pushed him off in the middle of the night, he’d kick his ass for sure.
“You just going to wear your clothes to bed? Jeans? Really?”
“Take off my clothes to sleep next to another dude? Forget it. It’s also fucking cold— Jonahwhatthefuckareyoudoing—” he suddenly stammered, watching with confused horror as Jonah sat up to pull his shirt over his head.
“It’s cool if you’re comfortable sleeping like that, but I’d rather die.”
Die then.
This sucked. Jonah was making himself too tempting. Adam could feel his brain about to short-circuit from knowing that Jonah’s bare torso would be right beside him all night, under the same covers. Why did Jonah have to look so… nice? He fought the thoughts away and turned out the lights. They were both tired as hell after spending all night looking for a place to stay, none of this would be a problem if they just went to sleep. They could leave first thing in the morning.
Adam awoke in the middle of the night to the feeling of arms around his waist. Pulling the covers out of the way just enough, he looked down, and even in the dark he could tell that it was Jonah hugging him from behind. His whole body started to heat up at the realization that Jonah was spooning him. Did this idiot even realize what he was doing?
Jonah grumbled, and Adam couldn’t tell if he was awake or just mumbling in his sleep. “ ‘M cold… Sorry…”
Adam was tempted to remove his shirt and delight in sharing body heat with the man he was in bed with, but what if Jonah wasn’t awake and this was all just an accident? It would be so awkward if he woke up to Adam stripping for him. And if he was awake already… did Adam really want him to know that he was secretly enjoying this?
He let his head sink deeper into the pillow in defeat. Adam would just have to pretend he was asleep for this.
